Thesis/Controlling Idea

A thesis statement is a sentence that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay or research paper, providing a clear direction for the reader.

A thesis statement is important because it guides the direction of the paper, helps organize the writer's thoughts, and informs the reader about the main argument.

A good thesis statement is specific, arguable, and provides a roadmap for the paper, outlining the main points that will be discussed.

A broad thesis statement is vague and general, while a specific thesis statement clearly defines the topic and the writer's stance.

The thesis statement should be placed at the end of the introduction paragraph.

The thesis formula is: Claim + reason1, reason2, and reason3.

An example of a weak thesis statement is: 'Many people like basketball.' This is too broad and does not provide a clear argument.

An example of a strong thesis statement is: 'Basketball promotes teamwork, improves coordination, and teaches responsibility, making it an essential sport for students.'

Topic sentences introduce the main idea of each paragraph and should support the thesis statement by providing evidence or examples.

You can revise a thesis statement by making it more specific, ensuring it is arguable, and clearly outlining the main points that will be discussed.
