Modal Verbs

Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs that express necessity, possibility, permission, or ability. Examples include can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.

'Used to' indicates a past habit or state that is no longer true. For example, 'I used to play soccer every Saturday.'

'May' is used to express permission or possibility. For example, 'You may leave the room.'

'Must' indicates necessity or obligation. For example, 'You must wear a seatbelt while driving.'

'Should' suggests a recommendation or advice. For example, 'You should study for the test.'

'Ought to' is similar to 'should' and suggests a moral obligation or recommendation. For example, 'You ought to help your friends.'

'Can' expresses ability or possibility. For example, 'I can swim.'

'Might' indicates a lower possibility than 'may.' For example, 'It might rain tomorrow.'

'Would' is used to express a hypothetical situation or a polite request. For example, 'I would go if I had time.'

'May' suggests a higher possibility than 'might.' For example, 'It may rain' is more certain than 'It might rain.'
