Force and Motion

An unbalanced force is a force that causes an object to change its state of motion, either by starting to move, stopping, or changing direction.

Force is a push or pull that can cause an object to move or change its motion. Motion is the change in position of an object.

An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant velocity unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.

The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and inversely proportional to its mass (F=ma).

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Friction is a force that opposes the motion of an object, caused by the contact between two surfaces.

Gravity is a force that attracts two bodies towards each other, commonly experienced as the force that pulls objects towards the Earth.

Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force exerted by gravity on that mass.

Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its state of motion.

A hand brake uses friction to slow down or stop the bicycle by pressing a rubber pad against the tire.
