Properties of Waves

A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another without transferring matter.

The two main types of waves are transverse waves and longitudinal waves.

A transverse wave is a wave in which the particles of the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the wave's travel.

A longitudinal wave is a wave in which the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave's travel.

Wavelength is the distance between two consecutive crests or troughs in a wave.

Frequency is the number of waves that pass a given point in one second, measured in Hertz (Hz).

Wavelength and frequency are inversely related; as the wavelength increases, the frequency decreases, and vice versa.

Amplitude is the maximum distance that the particles of a wave move from their rest position.

Sound travels faster in solids than in liquids, and faster in liquids than in gases due to the closeness of particles.

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of all types of electromagnetic radiation, including visible light.
