Multiplication and Division Word Problems 3.OA.A.3

Multiplication is a mathematical operation where a number is added to itself a certain number of times. For example, 3 multiplied by 4 (3 x 4) means adding 3 four times: 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12.

Division is a mathematical operation where a number is split into equal parts. For example, 12 divided by 4 (12 ÷ 4) means splitting 12 into 4 equal parts, which equals 3.

To solve a multiplication word problem, identify the total number of groups and how many are in each group. Then multiply the number of groups by the number in each group.

To solve a division word problem, identify the total amount and how many equal groups you need to split it into. Then divide the total by the number of groups.

The equation is: Total = Number of groups × Number of items in each group.

The equation is: Number of groups = Total ÷ Number of items in each group.

4 potatoes (2 bags × 2 potatoes per bag = 4 potatoes).

4 crates (12 sculptures ÷ 3 sculptures per crate = 4 crates).

30 ÷ 6 = b (where b is the number of bunches).

3 boats (12 people ÷ 4 people per boat = 3 boats).
