Ratios and Unit Rates

A ratio is a comparison of two quantities by division, showing how many times one value contains or is contained within the other.

To simplify a ratio, divide both terms by their greatest common factor (GCF).

A unit rate is a ratio that compares a quantity to one unit of another quantity, often expressed as 'per' something.

To find a unit rate, divide the total amount by the number of units.

The unit rate is 20 miles per hour (60 miles ÷ 3 hours).

To convert a fraction to its lowest terms, divide the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common factor (GCF).

The lowest term of 4/16 is 1/4.

Divide the total earnings by the number of days: $113.55 ÷ 5 = $22.71 per day.

Divide the total words by the total minutes: 408 words ÷ 4 minutes = 102 words per minute.

The lowest term of 18/24 is 3/4.
