A prefix is a group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning.

The prefix 'non-' means 'not' or 'without'. For example, 'fiction' becomes 'nonfiction', which means 'not fiction'.

The prefix 'mis-' means 'wrongly' or 'badly'. For example, 'understand' becomes 'misunderstand', which means 'to understand wrongly'.
