Verbals

A verbal is a word derived from a verb that functions as a different part of speech, such as a noun, adjective, or adverb.

The three types of verbals are infinitives, gerunds, and participles.

An infinitive is the base form of a verb, usually preceded by 'to', that can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb.

Example: 'She wants to learn Spanish.'

A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing that functions as a noun.

Example: 'Swimming is my favorite hobby.'

A participle is a verb form that can function as an adjective, typically ending in -ing or -ed.

Example: 'The broken window needs to be fixed.'

A gerund functions as a noun in a sentence.

A participle functions as an adjective in a sentence.
