Moon phases and eclipse

A Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Earth comes directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing the Earth's shadow to cover the Moon.

A Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon comes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light from reaching the Earth.

The First Quarter Moon phase is when half of the Moon is illuminated and visible from Earth, occurring about a week after the New Moon.

The Last Quarter Moon phase is when the opposite half of the Moon is illuminated compared to the First Quarter, occurring about three weeks after the New Moon.

A Waxing Gibbous Moon is the phase where more than half of the Moon is illuminated and is increasing in light, occurring between the First Quarter and Full Moon.

A Waning Gibbous Moon is the phase where more than half of the Moon is illuminated but is decreasing in light, occurring between the Full Moon and Last Quarter.

A Waxing Crescent Moon is the phase where a small sliver of the Moon is illuminated and is increasing in light, occurring just after the New Moon.

A Waning Crescent Moon is the phase where a small sliver of the Moon is illuminated but is decreasing in light, occurring just before the New Moon.

The Full Moon phase is when the entire face of the Moon is illuminated and visible from Earth, occurring about two weeks after the New Moon.

The different phases of the Moon are caused by the relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, which affect how much of the Moon's surface is illuminated.
