Quadrants and Reflections

A quadrant is one of the four sections of the coordinate plane, divided by the x-axis and y-axis.

There are four quadrants in a coordinate plane.

In Quadrant I, both x and y coordinates are positive.

In Quadrant II, the x coordinate is negative and the y coordinate is positive.

In Quadrant III, both x and y coordinates are negative.

In Quadrant IV, the x coordinate is positive and the y coordinate is negative.

To reflect a point (x, y) across the y-axis, change the sign of the x-coordinate to (-x, y).

To reflect a point (x, y) across the x-axis, change the sign of the y-coordinate to (x, -y).

The reflection of (4, 5) across the x-axis is (4, -5).

The reflection of (-2, -3) across the y-axis is (2, -3).
