To find the total cost after applying a discount, subtract the discount amount from the original price. For example, if an item costs $30 and has a 30% discount, the discount is $9, so the total cost is $30 - $9 = $21.

Two quantities are directly proportional if they increase or decrease together at a constant rate, meaning their ratio remains the same.
