Subject & Predicate

A simple subject is the main word or words in a subject that tell who or what the sentence is about, without any modifiers.

A complete subject includes the simple subject and all the words that describe or modify it.

A simple predicate is the main verb or verb phrase that tells what the subject does.

A complete predicate includes the verb and all the words that tell what happened in the sentence.

A compound subject has two or more simple subjects that share the same verb.

A compound predicate has two or more verbs or verb phrases that share the same subject.

In the sentence 'The cat sleeps,' 'cat' is the simple subject.

In the sentence 'The big brown dog barks,' 'The big brown dog' is the complete subject.

In the sentence 'The dog runs,' 'runs' is the simple predicate.

In the sentence 'The dog runs quickly in the park,' 'runs quickly in the park' is the complete predicate.
